Nebraska National Forest

Within the Sandhills area is the Nebraska National Forest, specifically the Bessey/Halsey area, which is best known for its hand-planted forest and the Bessey Nursery.

According to the Forest Service’s website, this unit “began in 1902 as an experiment to raise trees and plant them nearby in what became the largest human-planted forest in the United States.”

Unfortunately, they had a wildfire a few years ago, so the area we went to was full of burned trees.
