The Nebraska Sandhills Area

The Nebraska Sandhills were our main focus on exploring this weekend (in addition to getting many new counties!) They “are a vast, grass-stabilized sand dune region in north-central Nebraska, covering about a quarter of the state and holding the largest freshwater wetland system in the Western Hemisphere. [It was] formed by ancient glacial meltwater and wind, sits atop the Ogallala Aquifer and supports diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, and is a significant area for conservation.”
